FDA review indicates possible association between breast implants and a rare cancer
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced a possible association between saline and silicone gel-filled breast implants and anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL), a very rare type of cancer. Data reviewed by the FDA suggest that patients with breast implants may have a very small but significant risk of ALCL in the scar capsule adjacent to the implant.
Although the product was not intended to be sold for food use, its labeling is confusing and implies that it may be used as food.
The Illinois Department of Public Health has confirmed two cases of lead poisoning in consumers who used the product as an
ingredient in home cooked meals. Other uses of the product, including as a cosmetic, can also be dangerous due to the high lead levels.
The FDA is requesting that health care professionals report any confirmed cases of ALCL in women with breast implants.
In an effort to ensure that patients receiving breast implants are informed of the possible risk, FDA will be working with breast implant manufacturers in the coming months to update their product labeling materials for patients and health care professionals.
“We need more data and are asking that health care professionals tell us about any confirmed cases they identify,” said William Maisel, M.D., M.P.H., chief scientist and deputy director for science in FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. “We are working with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and other experts in the field to establish a breast implant patient registry, which should help us better understand the development of ALCL in women with breast implants.”
According to the National Cancer Institute, ALCL appears in different parts of the body including the lymph nodes and skin. Each year ALCL is diagnosed in about 1 out of 500,000 women in the United States. ALCL located in breast tissue is found in only about 3 out of every 100 million women nationwide without breast implants.

FDA reminds health care professionals about safe use of non-sterile alcohol prep pads
Following a recent recall of potentially contaminated non-sterile alcohol prep pads, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration today reminded health care professionals about the safe use of non-sterile alcohol prep pads to clean and disinfect the surface of the skin.
On Jan. 5, 2011 The Triad Group of Hartland, Wis., recalled all lots of its alcohol prep pads and swabs citing concerns about the product’s potential contamination with Bacillus cereus, a bacterium that can be harmful to humans.
“Health care professionals should always check the labeling on a prep pad to determine if it is sterile or non-sterile,” said Karen Weiss, M.D., director of the Safe Use Initiative in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “Non-sterile pads are not intended to prep patients prior to procedures requiring strict sterility measures and should not be used on patients with a depressed immune system, to prep patients for catheter insertion, or to prep patients prior to surgery.”
Weiss said many patients in hospitals are particularly susceptible to infections, and the FDA recommends sterile antiseptics (including chlorhexidine gluconate, alcohol or iodine applicators, pads, and swabs) in that setting.

Get the facts about the deadly MRSA (Staphylococcus aureus) Infection
throughout the environment and is sometimes carried by individuals without causing illness.
Although anyone can get a staph infection people are more likely to get staph infections from:
- Skin-to-skin contact with someone who has a staph infection or is a carrier
- Contact with items and surfaces that have staph on them
- Sharing personal items
- Openings in their skin such as cuts or scrapes
- Crowded living conditions
- Poor hygiene
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has estimated that the number of people who developed a serious MRSA
infection in 2005 was about 94,000, with approximately 19,000 deaths during a hospital stay related to these serious MRSA infections.
Serious MRSA disease is still predominantly related to healthcare delivery
- About 85% of invasive MRSA infections were associated with healthcare
- About 14% of all the infections occurred in persons without obvious exposures to healthcare
MRSA infections seen most frequently in the hospital include surgical wound, urinary tract, and bloodstream infections as well as pneumonia.
In the general population MRSA infections not associated with healthcare, called community acquired infections,
generally occur as skin infections that may look like pimples, boils or spider bites
The good news is that we can prevent MRSA from spreading!
In the hospital the first step to prevent MRSA is to prevent healthcare infections in general by following
infection control guidelines produced by CDC and the Healthcare Infection Control and Prevention Advisory Committee (HICPAC)
and incorporated into hospital infection control policies.
Other key strategies to prevent MRSA from spreading include:
- Wash your hands often or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
- Keep cuts and scrapes clean and covered with a bandage
- Do not touch other people’s cuts or bandages
- Do not share personal items like towels or razors
- Practice good personal hygiene
- Keep athletic wear and equipment clean or freshly laundered

An alternative to vaccine administered via shots isFluMist, a flu vaccine for
children and adults 2-49 years old, which is administered in the form of a nasal
spray. FluMist contains the live virus [a weakened version], and therefore only
licensed for certain groups of individuals without chronic medical conditions

As with all influenza vaccine, people who are allergic to eggs should not receive
FluMist. FluMist should also not be used in pregnant people [unlike the inactivated
injectable version of influenza vaccine, which is highly recommended for pregnant
people] or persons with chronic medical conditions, such as known or suspected
immune system problems, asthma, or reactive airway disease.
(From the manufacturer's web site: "FluMist should not be used, under any circumstances, in anyone with an allergy
to any part of the vaccine, including eggs; in children and adolescents receiving aspirin therapy; in people who
have a history of Guillain-Barré syndrome; and in people with known or suspected immune system problems.
Pregnant women, children under 24 months of age, and people with certain medical conditions, asthma, or
reactive airways disease; children under the age of 5 years with recurrent wheezing should not get FluMist.")
Prostate Cancer is a disease with the potential to affect an estimated 1 in 10 Males in the U.S. each year.
Prostate Cancer is a fairly common (1 in 10 chance of diagnosis for American males)

is a disorder of the skin which usually affects the scalp.
It can be found in humans from infancy, where it is commonly known
as 'cradle cap', through the adolescent years and well into old
age, where it is usually known as 'dandruff'.
In adults, it is most prevalent in Men!
The exact cause of Seborrhea is 'not known
by the medical community', however, it may be a result of Candida
or 'a yeast infection of the intestinal tract'.
Clinically, the most significant member of the genus is Candida albicans, which can cause numerous infections (called candidiasis or thrush)
in humans and other animals, especially in immunocompromised patients.
